From the history of this art form to current policy and
reimbursement issues to the technological foundation of
this modern day miracle to actual program development
details and hands on experience, this program of empowerment
seeks to eliminate the mystery of successful program development
by educating administrators, doctors and nurses alike.
A review of the history of telemedicine and telemedicine
applications will be presented. Comprehensive reviews
of current “traditional” telemedical programs as well
as “extreme” telemedical applications are reviewed. Current
telemedical programs, their development, licensure, accreditation,
reimbursement policies, privacy policies, medico-legal
aspects and why many programs fail are examined.
Participants will be given the opportunity to familiarize
themselves with Stryker operating room and its telecommunications
abilities. The technology involved with telementoring
will be introduced including a comprehensive review of
cameras, monitors, telestration, connectivity and data
transmission. Participants will also learn communications
protocols in order to telementor more effectively.
Unique experiences including simulated mission planning,
pre-procedural assessments, standardization of protocols,
and mission execution are also reviewed. We hope to inspire
the imaginations of surgeons by showcasing the variety
of applications of telementoring and telemonitoring.
