Overview of
some Telemedicine Projects
The Rainforest
and Messiah Projects involved the demonstration of mobile surgical services
delivery in combination with telemedicine. A mobile operating
suite was outfitted with a mobile low bandwidth telemedicine unit that
performed pre-operative evaluations between Dr. Rosser and the rainforest
of Ecuador. In addition, surgeons were mentored to perform advanced
laparoscopic procedures over a plain telephone line.
In
the Dominican Republic, six cases were guided over the course of two
days, after a weeklong educational period covering skill and technique
development, military communication skills and experience interfacing
with utilization of distant learning techniques, computer assisted training
and telementoring simulators. The goal of this project was to
provide a global demonstration of advanced telemedicine capability that
can bring cutting-edge care to patients no mater where in the world
they live.
Operation Beating
Heart, the Preventive Health Screening for Athletes Project, uses cutting
edge technology to implement an effective mass screening of the cardiac
anomalies that are often the cause of the tragic phenomenon of high
school and college athletes falling victim to "sudden death"
on the field of play for no apparent reason.
The
Cybermedic Project uses mobile wireless videography and portable videoconferencing
equipment to bring on field evaluation capability to any athlete no
matter where they are located. As demonstrated with the many recent
tragedies involving high school and college athletes, having an experienced
physician can be critical for optimal care. With broad implementation
of these two revolutionary techniques, these types of tragedies can
be decreased in the future.
