MINI-LAPAROSCOPY WITHOUT ANESTHESIA FOR GENERAL SURGEONS

COURSE OBJECTIVES

  • To provide experienced laparoscopic surgeons didactic and hands-on training in mini laparoscopy under local anesthesia
  • To enable the surgeon to become proficient in the safe performance of mini laparoscopy under local anesthesia for the evaluation of acute and chronic abdominal pain, pre-procedural minimally invasive completion evaluation (PMICE), placement of enteral feeding appliances and a variety of intra-abdominal biopsies all under local anesthesia
  • To expose general surgeons to the utility and limitations of using 2mm instrumentation in the general anesthetic environment
  • To provide supervised hands-on laboratory training with objective evaluation and assessment of mini laparoscopy procedures on inanimate and porcine models that emphasize its differences from traditional laparoscopy
  • To review the principles of local and systemic analgesia/sedation to enable the physician and nurse to safely administer conscious sedation
